Workshop in the Old City

Last day of workshop

Wednesday October 8th was the final day for the Art Photography Workshop with artist Signe Christine Urdal at An-Najah University in Nablus. For three weeks students from Fine Art and Media Department have been working in groups with an photography project about Nablus and the identity of the city. Most of the students have been working with projects in the Old City. After the student`s presentation, critical group discussion and visit from the Nablus Society in Stavanger we all went to the old city. Just in time before the sun went down.

TAP – The Art Project

A twinning project between professional artists from regions of Nablus and Stavanger organized by Nablus society in Stavanger and An-Najah University of Fine Art in Nablus.

The privilege of art

Photography is a strong visual way of telling stories about life and the human condition. No matter where we come from or which language we speak, we all have the possibility to read a photograph.
For the last three weeks the student have worked with the theme of identity and what it means to a city and it`s people. Working toward an exhibition or presentation with an art project is not always the goal itself, but the process through time, reflection and discussion. To have the possibility to ask questions rather than getting the correct answer.
The philosopher Socrates asked questions of those he talked with.  Although they should reflect on their own answers.

So it is with art. As artist`s we communicate with the viewer. We ask questions and the viewer have the possibility to reflect append a certain theme. Art is all about value, experience, emotions and intellectual property. A critical look into the society?
An artist`is most important role is to listen and create public space. Be a difference. Maybe also a new way of seeing the world? The work of art is a privilege, but it is also a responsibility. As artists we have the opportunity to say something about something.
